Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of using Dogs In My Home for our dog(s)?

This service provides your dog with the most healthy separation possible for your pet. It is so much less traumatic for them to be away from you when their routines are continued, when the same words are used to communicate with them, when they continue to live in a home as part of the family, where they can sit next to us on the sofa (or on our laps), where they can follow us around everywhere, where they can continue to get that individualized special loving they are used to with activities they love (do they love a good ear scratch, or is their belly their favorite, do they like to eat ice cubes, play ball, or do they love a good game of tug?). We also provide you with pictures via facebook while you are travelling so that you can keep up with your pets visit. This simply provides you with additional peace of mind so that you can focus on enjoying your trip. We are here with them 24/7 and you can call whenever you want to check on them. Lastly, we don't have standard hours, instead we work with you individually making every effort to ensure you can pick up your dog when you return home, not making you wait until the next day because you were not here by 5 p.m.. We know how empty a house is for you when you are used to having that bundle of love running around in it.

Will my pet ever be left alone?

No, someone will always be at home when there are guests in the house. Your pet has someone here to love and care for them 24/7.

Can you provide references

Please visit our testimonial section of our website to read comments left by previous guests. You can also find additional testimonials on our facebook page (simply sear for Dogs In My Home), there are also several reviews on Angie's List.

What happens if my pet becomes sick while I am away?

This is why we ask for all of your vet info and emergency contact. Because we are here 24/7 with them, we would be able to spot any changes in your dog's behavior and health. We will make every attempt to contact you directly, and then try your emergency contact. Depending on the urgency, and the hours of your veterinarian's office, we would take them to your vet, or to a nearby animal hospital.

How far in advance do I need to make a reservation?

We recommend that you make your reservation as soon as possible. Some of our clients call to check availability before scheduling that time off from work or confirming any flights/hotels. Because we only take such a small number of dogs our spaces fill up quickly, this is especially true during holidays and vacation season (late May through early September). The earlier you call the better the chance of getting the dates you want.

Does my dog have to be spayed or neutered?

Yes, all guests must be spayed or neutered unless they are under one year old.

Is the Bordatella shot required since you are not really a Kennel?

You should discuss this with your own veterinarian. It is up to you, I recommend it, the same as a "flu" shot for us. Your dog will be around other dogs, drinking out of the same water bowls, playing together, etc., and it is a good precaution for you to have this shot yearly. However, all other immunizations are required and we ask that you bring a copy of your pet's shot record at your first visit.

Should I bring food for my dog?

YYes, your pet needs to stay on the same food they normally eat. Switching food can lead to bad stomachs and diarrhea.

Should I bring his food bowl?

It is suggested that you bring their bowl, so that as much "normalcy" as possible is kept for them throughout their stay. This is not required and we do have extra bowls here at all times.

Should I bring anything else?

Yes, if your pet sleeps on a doggie bed or favorite blanket, you should bring that so they have a "smell of home" here. You can also get out an old towel or throw and let them/you get your smells on that for a few days and bring that with them. We ask that you do not bring their favorite toy as that can lead to possessiveness issues, as well as there being a fair chance that it would not come back in the same shape as it arrived. There are loads of toys here for them to play with and tear up as desired, so it is best to leave those for them to reunite with when they come home.

What about treats?

We have a variety of treats here all the time and include all the dogs in treat time unless specifically instructed not to. If your dog has a sensitive stomach or a special treat that he normally gets, feel free to bring them along and we'll be sure that is what is given to them.

What about medicine?

We will administer medications according to your instructions.

Are there any additional charges for special treats, special feeding's, or administering medications?

No, these are all considered part of your dog's stay and there are no additional charges for them.

Are there certain hours that I can drop off or pick up my dog?

We don't have "hours", and we try to be as accommodating as possible. We prefer dogs to be dropped off at least 2-3 hours before bedtime so they have time to adjust to their new surroundings before they go to bed.

Where will my dog sleep?

We have dogs that sleep in bed with us, we have dogs that sleep on their beds beside ours, we have some dogs that sleep in their crates (only at the owners request, and when supplied by the owner) as we don't use kennels or crates.

Does my dog have to be potty trained?

Yes. There is an additional charge if your dog is not potty trained, or if it is under 6 months old. This is the one exception to our no crate rule. We prefer you supply us with their crate only so they can sleep in it overnight to avoid any accidents. We will work with them while they are out during the day to help with the continued training.

Are there discounts for additional dogs?

Yes, the first dog is $30/24 hours, the 2nd and any subsequent dogs are $25/24 hours.

So you never have more than 10 guests?

The only exception to this is during holidays, and when weekend stays overlap (meaning dogs get dropped off on Friday, while the guests already here get picked up on Sunday), however during these times my husband and I are both here to care for the dogs.

Do you provide transportation?

Yes, we can pick-up or return your pet to your home. There is a $15 charge for each way based on availability.
